Problem

Milton Keynes was missing something…
The soul and spice of Afro-Caribbean cuisine.

The Jerk N Rum brand was going to change that.

Despite its growing food scene, Milton Keynes lacked a dedicated takeaway serving authentic Afro-Caribbean food. The client recognised a gap — not just in flavour, but in experience. Jerk n Rum was born from a passion to deliver more than just a meal. The goal was to create a brand that serves bold, crave-worthy dishes with quality, consistency, and cultural pride — all wrapped in a vibrant, memorable identity that stands out both on the street and online.

Jerk N Rum needed a standout brand in a highly competitive street food market. The challenge was to capture the vibrancy and authenticity of Afro-Caribbean culture in a visual identity that could match the recognisability and consistency of big brands like McDonald’s, but with soul.

Project goals:

  • Create a bold, culturally rich visual identity

  • Design a system adaptable across physical and digital touchpoints

  • Engage a younger, visually driven audience on social media

  • Help the brand stand out at crowded events and markets

Brainstorming and ideation process:

I began with cultural research, drawing inspiration from Caribbean street art, textile patterns, island music, and traditional food presentations. I explored ways to translate those textures and rhythms into colour palettes, typography, and illustration styles. Moodboards, sketches, and visual experiments helped refine the direction.

Solution

This was a full, standalone brand development project, but the assets were designed with future campaigns in mind that allow for scalable and flexible for long-term growth.

Channel-specific design:

  • Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook – Reels, stories, countdowns, and promos

  • Physical events – Branded banners, posters, and stand setups

  • Packaging – Takeaway boxes, food wraps, labels

  • Van branding – Full vehicle wrap with custom Afro-Caribbean-inspired illustrations

Maintaining a consistent visual identity:

The brand guidelines ensured visual consistency across all channels, from colour usage and illustration style to font hierarchy and tone of voice. A modular design system allowed for adaptability without losing brand recognition.

Adapting to time, budget, or creative constraints:

Working with a start-up meant being resourceful. I created reusable design templates and prioritized high-impact visuals. The van wrap, for example, was illustrated in a way that allowed scale without expensive print complexity.
